WANT TO KNOW...
what a Christian believes?
1. The Bible
They believe and accept that the whole Bible is the Word of God and is divinely inspired, infallible and is the supreme authority in every matter of faith and conduct. (II Timothy 3:15-17;
II Peter 1:21; Romans 1:16).
2. God
They believe in the one true God, eternal, omnipotent, creator and Lord of all things and that his being comprises 3 distinct, equal and eternal Persons: Father, Son and Spirit
(Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; Ephesians 4:6; John 5:17).
3. The Lord Jesus
They believe that the Lord Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, took on the nature of a man, was born of the virgin Mary and is wholly man and wholly God. (John:1,2,14; Luke 1:34,35; Matthew 1:23). They believe in: his sinless life; his authoritative teaching; his miracles; his sacrificial and substitutionary death; his bodily resurrection; his ascension to the Father's right hand as unique Mediator and Intercessor; his imminent personal, visible and physical return to earth to establish his kingdom with power and glory (1 Peter 2:22; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Acts 2:22; 1 Peter 3:18; Romans 1:4; 2:24; 1 Corinthians 15:24,25;
1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25; Revelation:7,8).
4. The Holy Spirit
They believe in the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity, who proceeds from the Father and the Son and who is omnipresent and active in the work of conviction and rebirth of the sinner, of sanctification and guiding the believer
(John 14:26; 16:8-15; 1 Peter 1:2; Romans 8:14).
5. Angels and the devil
They believe in the existence of angels, created wholly pure and that a part of them rebelled against God through the actions of satan. They believe in the personality of the devil, who through his influence caused the fall of man, and is now trying to destroy the faith of everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:1-15; Matthew 4:1-11; Ephesians 6:11,12; James:4:7; 1 Peter 5:8; John 13:2).
6. The fall of man
They believe that man was created by God in his image, morally righteous and perfect, but that he fell through his own volition through sin. As a consequence all men are separated from God, having lost their original righteousness or rightstanding with him, and are lost and spiritually dead. (Genesis 1:26-31; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-21).
7. Atonement
They believe that God's response to the sinful state of man is in the death on the cross of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose sufferings and blood made full atonement for the sins of the whole world - past, present and future - and that there is no other way to salvation except believing in Jesus' atonement (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Galatians 1:3,4; Ephesians 1:7;
Hebrews 9:25,26; 1 Peter 1:18,20).
8. Salvation of man
They believe that salvation and eternal life is obtained by repentance and faith in the 'once for all' sacrifice of the Lord Jesus. This experience of accepting Jesus as Saviour is also known as being 'born again' as described by Jesus. It is the complete and instant work of the Holy Spirit, through whom the sinner who believes, is regenerated, justified and adopted into the family of God and becomes a new creation in Christ Jesus and heir of eternal life.
(John 3:3; Acts 2:38; Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11; 3:5-7;
1 Peter 1:18,19,23; 1 John 5:1).
9. The church
They believe in the unity and spiritual priesthood of all believers in Christ, who comprise the universal Church, the body of Christ, where God dwells through his Holy Spirit, who have the divine task of fulfilling his Great Commission. Every believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the joyful assembly, the church of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven in the Lamb's book of life.
(Ephesians 1:22,23; 2:22; Hebrews 12:23).
10. Baptism in water
Christians believe in the baptism in water by full immersion into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit for those who repent and believe in the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour (Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 2:38,39; 10:47,48; Romans 6:4,5; Colossians 2:12; Mark 16:16).
11. Holy communion
They believe in holy communion, with bread and wine as symbols expressing our sharing in the divine nature of the Lord Jesus Christ, a commemoration of his sufferings and of his death and as a proclamation of his imminent return (2 Peter 1:4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29; Luke 22:15-20; Matthew 26:26-28;
Acts 20:7).
12. Sanctification
Christians believe that every believer is sanctified, set apart from all that is evil, and is consecrated to God. God gives every believer in Jesus a pure heart and full sanctification through the work of the Holy Spirit, the blood of Jesus and the Word of God. Man is a tripartite being: body, soul (his mind, will, emotions and conscience) and spirit. When born again it is man's spirit that is wholly re-created, to be one with/inseparable from/and indistinguishable from, the Spirit of God. A Christian is then 'transformed' by the renewing of his mind through the Word of God. His body is 'transformed' on the day his body takes on the incorruptible and all 3 parts of him, body, soul and spirit, are reunited and totally redeemed.
(John 17:15-19; Acts 15:8,9; 1 Thessalonians 4:3,4; 5:23,24;
Hebrews 2:11; 10:16-19;
Romans 12:1-2; 1 John 4:17).
13. Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Christians believe in the baptism in the Holy Spirit, as a secondary experience to the new birth, that bestows on the believer the power to be an effective witness for Jesus. Receiving this, the believer receives power for a fuller participation in the ministry of the Church, in worship, evangelisation and service. In the Holy Spirit they receive through faith and show, they speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance, with signs following. (Acts 1:4,5,8; 2:1-4; 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-17; 15:7-9; 19:1-7).
14. Gifts and ministries
Christians believe in the gifts and love of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers that are used to edify, encourage and comfort the Christian community (Acts 12:4-11; Galatians 5:22;
Hebrews 13:15; Romans 12:1).
They also believe in the ministries of the glorified Christ, i.e. apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, who are given to the church to equip the saints (believers) for the work of the ministry, i.e. our work of reconciliation of the world to God
(Ephesians 4:11-13).
15. Divine healing
Christians believe that divine healing is part of the divine atonement of Jesus on the cross, paid for by his wounds/stripes. Healing is obtained through faith, prayer, anointing with oil and the laying on of hands. It is the inheritance of every believer who, through faith, has access to all the infallible promises of our heavenly Father.
(1 Peter 2:24; Exodus 15:26)
16. Resurrection of the dead
Christians believe in resurrection from the dead and in the final judgement of the world; in the eternal joy and glorification of the redeemed (born again in Christ) and in the eternal damnation of the wicked - those who reject the gift of salvation through Christ's atonement , which is the only sin that is unforgiveable
(Matthew 25:46; Acts 17: 30-32; Romans 8:17,18,29,30;
2 Thessalonians 2: 8-10; Revelation 20:4-6,11-15; 21:8).
